What is Lean Six Sigma?

Six Sigma is a quality control methodology that turns insights into change. It consists of various tools, techniques and step-by-step approaches, all of which have the same goal – to deliver better products or services to customers. Six Sigma offers practical methods for improving the efficiency of operational processes. It does so by finding and eliminating variations and opportunities for error, thus increasing the number of successful results.

Lean Six Sigma is an enhanced version of the original. It combines the essential efficiency and quality focus of Six Sigma with a separate methodology called Lean. Lean aims to eliminate all wasteful production steps – those that are deemed unprofitable as well as deviations from standard processes – leaving only those that directly add value.

From a Lean perspective, a feature or change only adds value if the customer would pay for it. If a step doesn’t directly boost profits, Lean eliminates it from production. It’s all about making production more efficient. When you cut steps that don’t drive income, you make more room for those that do. And when you take those steps and refine them to eliminate errors, you boost a project’s overall payoff.

About the Program

Combining the waste-fighting measures of Lean practices, with the variation and defect-reducing techniques of Six Sigma, the Certificate in Lean Six Sigma can help you eliminate the root causes of defects and waste to make business operations more effective and efficient. The certificate is comprised of two required courses and one elective, which enables you to gain the Lean Six Sigma foundational knowledge while also adding an elective that customizes your learning experience and helps you reach your unique education goals.

The program also allows you to apply your learned knowledge throughout the courses with simulated projects to help you successfully practice Lean Six Sigma outside the classroom. These projects are critical pieces of the certificate and require that students have experience in Microsoft Excel or another spreadsheet tool.
